Emotions rule on Mondays
One way or another, we’ve all said “Ugh! Mondays are the worst!”
Right after a day of worshipping the Sun (sun’s day) comes Monday. So many dread Mondays and have you ever wondered why?
When I had a job for a brief period of time in an office, I would rush to a coffee shop before work and I always watched people who held books and quietly drinking coffee there on Monday morning with a deep sense of longing. That was my dream, to wake up on Monday morning and sit with a cup of coffee.
So when I quit this job, the very next day, I did just that. I sat at a corner table, with my cup of coffee and watched people line up in a hurry, as I started journaling.
It felt wonderful, not to have that anxiety of Monday mornings and somehow felt so right.
My entire week went just right when I worshipped and treasured Mondays.
Meanings of Moon
In Old English, the word, Monday comes from “Monandæg” meaning Moon’s day. In Vedic Astrology, Mondays are days for Chandra, again, a day influenced for the Moon.
In so many cultures, Mondays are days signified with Moon.
Moon represents our:
- ability to ride the waves of emotions
- connections with family
- ability to observe, listen and be receptive
Ayurveda and Moon
You’ve heard before, that our bodies are 90% water. So just like the changing tides, we are affected by the moon. Yogic teachings also associate the Moon with manas, our mind. And in this case, our conscious and subconscious minds are both affected by the moon as well.
In Ayurveda, the energy of moon has calm, soothing effects on our body and mind. It also reflects back the sun’s excess heat. The moon is also associated with the right side of the brain, of creativity, conversations that come from heart as opposed to head, pituitary gland and female reproductive organs. So it is no coincidence that our menstrual cycles are about 28-29 days, roughly the same cycle as the moon phases.
The wisdom of Ayurveda explains that bodies are attuned to the moon phases. New Moon is a time of darkness, reflection and if you are menstruating, this is called White Moon, where women menstruate during this time and ovulate during full moon, which is considered to be the most ideal cycle. Why? Because if you are trying to have a baby, Full Moon, when we have longer periods of light and our Pitta (energy of passion and creativity) is the highest.
If you are no longer menstruating, you still are connected to the rhythm of nature. While this is true for all women, and for all creatures, remember, we are all beings with feminine and masculine energies within.
Aligning your week with stars
While I understand not everyone can take a day off on Mondays to go to a cafe, it is possible to align yourself with teachings of Vedic Astrology (Jyotish) and other schools of wisdom with stars, you know, just to make sure you have all the support you can get.
So I often align my Mondays with writings and reflection. It’s the time I focus on writing my blogs, without publishing them so that I have time to reconsider and edit later.
Tuesdays are days of Mars. Mars represent activities and challenges. Fire. I bake my cookies for SOMA CAFE or scuba divers of Bubble Addict Okinawa on Tuesdays.
Wednesdays are days where my energy of communication, methods and strategies is sharper. So I have yoga lessons first thing in the morning and I have Yogic Counseling clients booked on these days, and in-between, I sit down to write and publish my blogs.
Thursdays are days of Thor, in Vedic tradition, it is a day to contemplate and appreciate your Guru also.
Fridays, a day of Freda (in Norse) or Maha Lakshmi in Hindu tradition. The luscious, goddess, feminine energy flourishes and it is a great day for socializing. So the idea of TGIF was not so far off from traditional wisdom.
Saturdays are ruled by Saturn. It is a great day for reflection once again so my meditation circle is held on Saturdays.
Sundays are the days of the Sun. Heat and masculine energy. It is a great day to dedicate your practice on Sunday mornings to balance feminine and masculine energies of the week.
Aligning our days with stars and moon phases doesn’t have to be a big deal. A simple adaptation will do the trick just to make it a little sweeter for your week.
